The Note's Anna Goldenberg was able to ask Jon and Roy some questions about their favorite places to play and about their new record, The Road Ahead Is Golden.
AG: What was the inspiration behind the album title The Road Ahead is Golden?
JR: A little dose of optimism in a bleak era? Ultimately, we do think the road ahead is golden. Bad things come and go, good things come and go, but in the end all is well. And of course, you never deny the bad, but knowing everything is essentially ok is a good place to start from.
AG: What is your favorite place to perform and why?
JR: We love performing locally, in Victoria and in the smaller towns on Vancouver Island because everyone is very supportive and have been so good to us. We always have an incredibly fun time playing anywhere on Vancouver Island or nearby. Overseas, we've very much enjoyed most places. However, I think Berlin, Amsterdam and Munich really stand out. Great cities and crowds.
AG: You have been making great music for a long time. What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just getting started?
JR: Hmm, honestly nothing. No regrets had. It really does feel like everything has unrolled as it should and is continuing to do so. We started off playing small shows locally and it was always an amazing and positive vibe from the get go. Financially, we weren't killing it, but we were making some money and we were having a great time doing so. Things have only evolved from there, and we kept control of our careers enough that we've never really felt out of step in an unintentional way. We've made and had minor blunders, but it's always led us forward in some way.
AG: Do you have any traditions or rituals when you are on the road? Or do you mostly fly by the seat of your pants?
JR: Our only real tradition is having a shot of tequila pre-show. In Europe, we switch that up for a liquor called Hierbas made in Ibiza. Oh, and no chain fast food.
AG: What is next on the docket for Jon and Roy?
JR: Hard to say, we are touring a little upcoming and doing some shows that will be career highlights including headlining our favorite venue in Vancouver, the Commodore Ballroom. We will also soon be playing our favorite cities in Europe and those are selling very well so that is exciting. Lastly, a few American and Canadian festivals and hopefully a new record Spring 2019.
