Electro-Soul duo ED.1T chatted with The Note's Charlie Blasberg about their creative process, an eventful upcoming spring, and some funny stories from the road.
CB: Electro-Soul is a really interesting blend. Which artists have influenced your music?
ED: Everyday is someone new, but if Daft Punk and Scott Storch hired Santana to join the project, it would kind of represent our style.
CB: How did you guys link up to form ED.1T?
ED: Through a couple mutual friends, Nahuel (songwriter/guitarist) was introduced to Karo (producer/keyboardist) on Instagram. Meeting up only weeks later to keep that work going all the way to this present day. We were both in the same place mentally at a different time in our lives, wanting to express that musically. We share that same mentality to this day.
CB: You have a really eventful spring coming up. Tell me about it.
ED: Early April is the release of "Breathe" and considering the content, the video is scheduled to come out 4/20. There's also a collaboration EP we're doing with local artist Joseph Harry Dugan. It's a whole dance oriented project that expresses a deep sense of vulnerability through the music and lyrics. We also incorporated some half-time vibes to add perspective and spice up the flavor on some of the tracks. We’ve had a lot of fun creating it so far, and we’re excited to be sharing it with the world in the coming weeks. In fact, “F**ked Up”, the first single from the EP will be coming out very soon!
CB: What is your songwriting process like?
ED: The process itself begins with inspiration. We literally just throw ideas at each other until we both feel moved by a piece of music or a groove. After we lay the idea down, then begins the editing process (coincidentally our favorite process). This is where we do a lot of our experimentation and try to push buttons and boundaries alike. Basically, this is where the singer-songwriters within us meet the electronic musicians and producers. Keeping a balance between the two can be challenging, but it’s also what really motivates us. In theory, we strive to find new sounds and create compositions that not only bend genres, but also push music forward. But at the end of the day, we just do what sounds good!
As far as our setup goes, we like to just hop into the "spaceship" and takeoff. We're always jamming on the keys and guitar and often having a conversation through our instruments. But in the end, being inspired is the only process needed for us to get it going.
CB: Do you have any funny stories from shows you've played?
ED: Not as much funny as terrifying, depending on how you look at it. Being electronic musicians, we’ve relied on computers and technology almost as a third bandmate. Or as Nahuel likes to call it, our “band in a box.” One time, our computer literally took a dive at soundcheck and wouldn’t turn on for like 15 mins. We kind of panicked, made some calls, then miraculously the computer decided to wake up. Another time in Miami, Karo’s keyboard and drum machine almost tipped over and fell off stage. Though they were a lil scary at the time, we look back at it and just laugh at those moments.
ED.1T's collaborations with Joseph Harry Dugan will be coming out throughout this spring, and "Breathe" is coming out in April. To learn more about ED.1T and listen to their music, check out their feature in the March 8 edition of The Note.
