The Note's Anna Goldenberg had the chance to chat with Caroline Pennell about her new record, Phase, and her career since being a finalist on The Voice.
AG: How has your career changed since The Voice?
CP: My career has completely changed since The Voice. Honestly, I would go to say that it started nearly 2 years after the show. It took me a second to develop a sound and commit to the idea of moving out to LA to pursue music full time. It used to be a hobby, and now it’s a full on career that I do everyday.
AG: What were the influences behind your latest record?
CP: Influences behind my latest record varied from the music I grew up on - Ben Folds, Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson - to music I love so much now - Lorde, Jon Bellion, to name a few - that leans more indie pop. Once the record was finished it was fun for me to listen back and hear all the influences I didn’t purposefully pull from but that poured into the record naturally.
AG: Now that the record’s dropped, what are you up to? What does your “normal” day look like?
CP: I am playing some shows around LA, working on my second record, and just trying to grow everyday as an artist. I write a lot of songs for other artists as well so a normal day for me is waking up, answering emails about current songs in the work, working on artwork or visuals, going to meetings with my publisher or manager, drinking a lot of coffee and then going to a session around 1 to write for either myself or whatever artist is in the room that day :)
